How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Mac, Windows and online
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, and many tools marketers use, including Meta, Google Ads and X ad uploads, only accept JPG or PNG. The quickest fix is to convert the files: drop them into a converter, pick JPG, and download. You can also change your iPhone to save JPGs from now on.
What HEIC is
HEIC is Apple's name for images saved in the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF). iPhones have used it by default since iOS 11 in 2017. It stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG with similar quality, which saves space on your phone.
The trade-off is compatibility. Ad platforms, content management systems, email tools and many Windows apps don't open HEIC files, so a photo that looks fine on your phone gets rejected on upload.
Option 1: Convert in your browser

Option 2: Make your iPhone save JPGs
- For new photos: go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos are saved as JPG from then on. Existing photos stay HEIC.
- When moving photos to a computer: go to Settings → Photos and, under Transfer to Mac or PC, choose Automatic. Your iPhone converts photos to JPG when you import them over a cable.
Option 3: On a Mac
- One photo: open it in Preview, choose File → Export, and set Format to JPEG.
- Several photos: select them in Finder, right-click, and choose Quick Actions → Convert Image. Pick JPEG and a size.
Option 4: On Windows
Windows needs Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files. Once it's installed, open the photo in Photos or Paint and save a copy as JPG. For many photos at once, a browser converter is faster.
JPG, PNG or WebP?
- JPG for photos going into ads, email or social posts. It's accepted everywhere.
- PNG only when you need transparency or perfectly sharp edges, like a logo. Photo files get much larger.
- WebP for your own website. It's smaller than JPG, but some older apps and ad platforms don't accept it.
