Subject Line Previewer

See how your sender name, subject line and preview text look in Gmail, iPhone Mail and Outlook before you hit send. Compare up to four subject lines and catch what gets cut off.

How to use it

  1. Enter your sender name, subject line and preview text.
  2. Add variants if you're A/B testing, and pick which one to preview.
  3. Check each inbox for where the text gets cut off, in light and dark mode.
  4. Fix anything flagged, like a missing preview text or a merge tag with no fallback.

Questions

How long should a subject line be?

Most opens happen on phones, where roughly the first 30 to 40 characters show. Put the words that matter most at the start and let the rest be a bonus.

What happens if I leave the preview text empty?

The inbox shows the first text it finds in your email instead, which is often "View in browser" or alt text from your logo.

What is the spacer snippet for?

If your preview text is short, inboxes fill the rest of the line with the start of your email. Invisible spacer characters after the preview text stop that from happening.

Why preview with an empty merge tag?

Subscribers without a first name on file see whatever your fallback is. Without one they get subject lines like ", your list is ready".

Are these exact?

No. Where text is cut depends on the device, font, zoom and inbox settings. The previews use typical widths so you can compare lines and spot problems.

How the previews work

Each inbox is drawn at a typical width: a 393-pixel-wide phone for Gmail and iPhone Mail, a 360-pixel Outlook message list, and a Gmail desktop inbox in a 1440-pixel window. Cut-off points are measured from your text in those layouts. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
